Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) / Hormonal Balance / Hot Flashes / Menopause

Supplement GuideWomen can naturally balance their hormones. Bio-identical hormones can help reduce hot flashes, fatigue, insomnia; lower the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease; and maximize the quality of life. Studies show that progesterone is the first hormone to deplete in most women. Deficiency symptoms include PMS, hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and miscarriages. Regular hormone testing is important to determine your specific need. Saliva testing appears to be the most accurate for determining hormone levels because saliva measures only levels of active hormones. The safest estrogen is estriol. Estrone and estradiol are toxic forms of estrogen. Estriol can reverse vaginal atrophy, increase cervical mucus, and reduce hot fl ashes and sweating. A five-year prospective study of estriol therapy revealed that this treatment was successful in 92 percent of cases (Horm Metab Res. (Nov. 1987): 19:11:579–84. According to Jonathan V. Wright, MD, who pioneered the use of many bioidentical hormones, replacement dosages fluctuate considerably among individual women. He also adds that supplementation should follow the same monthly cycles as estrogen. Note: Women with estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer should stay away from any form of estrogen to avoid stimulating tumor growth. Testosterone is essential for women’s ovaries and adrenal glands at about one tenth the level as in men. Testosterone steadily declines from around the age of 30 and some post-menopausal women may have very low testosterone. If you suspect imbalance in your hormones, find a doctor who is skilled and knowledgeable to measure and give you the correct level of hormones. You also need to be monitored from time to time through urine, saliva, or a blood test.
