Dementia: Vascular, Lewy Body and Other Types

Supplement Guide Vascular Dementia (VaD) is the result of single or multiple strokes in the main area of a damaged brain caused by loss of blood flow. VaD usually has an immediate, sudden onset following a stroke. Progression of VaD may manifest as deterioration in functioning, stabilizing for a time and then deteriorating again. Some examples of affected areas of the brain are vision, memory, and language. Some VaD risk factors are age (over 65), high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, poor diet, and a sedentary lifestyle. Lewy body-dementia (LBD) is characterized by dramatic fluctuations in daily cognitive functions, visual hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, motor disturbances, and impaired balance and muscle rigidity. LBD is an aggressive disease that is relentless in destroying the brain, generally within five to seven years, much faster than Alzheimer’s disease. Treatment is difficult, but diagnosis may not be difficult due to the presence of a gelatinous proteinaceous substance (Lewy bodies) embedded in the interior of brain cells, which can be identified by various means. There are other types of dementia that do not clearly fall into one of the above classifications. The supplements recommended below are also appropriate for these other types of dementia. Recommended Supplements: Brain Food, Royal Jelly, Grape Seed Extract, EDTA Oral Chelation (if you have clogged arteries), Neuro Balancer, Enzymes, Super, Multiple for Every Man, Multiple for Every WomanBrain Igniter, Heart Prolongevity, L-Glutamine, Healthy Liver, and Galantamine. After one month, try Immune Enhancer I and Immune Enhancer III. (We are close to completing research in formulating a supplement specifically for these dementias.) About Galantamine: In a study in which half a dozen American medical institutions collaborated, galantamine (one of the ingredients in Neuro Balancer) was given orally twice daily, in doses of 8mg a day for the first four weeks, then 16mg a day for the next four weeks, then 24mg a day for the duration of the non-placebo-controlled study. This regimen produced remarkable improvement in memory, attention, visual-spatial tasks, reduction in apathy, depression, and hallucinations—and participants were able to perform routine daily tasks with greater ease. *Edwards, K.R., Hershey L., Bednarczyk, E.M., Lichter, D., Farlow, M., and Johnson, S. “Efficacy and safety of Galantamine in patients with dementia with Lewy bodies: a 12-week interim analysis.” Dement Geriatr cogn Discnd (2004): 17: (Supp 1): 40-8. Note: You don’t have to order all the supplements listed for each health condition. Start with the first one to three products, based on your needs. Take supplements for a minimum of one month (in severe cases longer) until relieved of the symptoms. Then take supplements on and off for maintenance.
