Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Supplement Guide Multiple Sclerosis results from the gradual destruction of myelin, a fatty substance that forms a protective sheath on nerve fibers (axons). The myelin coating of axons permits normal nerve transmissions. As myelin in the brain and spinal cord is replaced by plaques and scar tissue, nerve transmission is slowed and disrupted. Initially this degenerative process affects primarily motor nerves; as the disease progresses, sensory and other types of neurons are increasingly affected. Most impressive is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is promising. Researchers theorize that oxygen delivery to nerve tissues can relieve symptoms without serious side effects. HBOT delivers oxygen to every cell in the body; this stabilizes the disease and stops the progressive deterioration. Low pressure HBO of 1.3–1.5 atmospheres produces the best results. Experts say that the chamber’s atmospheric pressure increases the number of molecules of oxygen dissolved in the blood.
